I have been using VoIP.ms for over 10 years now to replace my home phone service from the major telecoms (Telus/Rogers/Bell here in Canada, but it works in the US and Europe/Asia as well). It has been very stable and the price is hard to beat. I use it with a Grandstream HT801 (there are other devices, but this one worked great for me) and the combination is rock-solid.
To hook it up, I simply unplugged the legacy telecom connection at the entry point of my home and plugged in the HT801 instead. One thing I really like is the base price ($1.10/month) includes voicemail (including to email), blacklisting/callerID filtering, E911, and softphone support if you want to use your number on your cellphone. Even though it's a "landline," you can also send and receive SMS/MMS texts through their web portal or mobile app.
